Stay UMC - Continuing as a Member of the United Methodist Church
posted on November 23
In this season when some churches are choosing to disaffiliate from the United Methodist Church, we are frequently asked what to do if your local church votes to leave but you wish to remain.
If your local congregation is planning to disaffiliate, but you would like to remain in The United Methodist Church, there are options that you can explore.
- Unite with another UM church. You can use our church directory on the KYUMC.org website, https://www.kyumc.org/churches to browse churches by name or by district. If you are unsure of your district, use this district map to locate your district, https://www.kyumc.org/districts. Hover over the names of the districts and the counties in that district will be highlighted.
- In the event you are unable to swiftly unite with another local church, your district can hold your membership until you find a local UMC congregation you wish to join or until December 31, 2023. Click here to move your church membership from a disaffiliating church into the care of your District. Your District will hold your membership during this time of transition until December 31, 2023.
